SHELTER UPDATE

A box of kittens!

A box of kittens!

Oh No! It’s “Kitten Season”!! The PuRR Nursery took in 20 kittens in April, most around two to three weeks of age and all needing a lot of special care. Thanks to fosters Sharon Trigg, Ashley Hejlik & Bonnie Cretzman (and Hilda) for bottle-feeding duties. Most of these were just left at the gate in a box or thrown over the fence and some will not survive but we do the best we can. It is overwhelming this time of year.

We also received a beautiful Siamese female rescued by a waiter from Eddie’s Place in Nuevo Vallarta…..just in time for her to deliver a litter of five!! Mama Marina is now safe in her own little casita….and has already been Virtually Adopted by

Nan Cutler of Colorado! Nan and her friend Sandy Hargrove had spotted “Marina” when they were vacationing here and coordinated her rescue from afar.

In addition to 200 cats and one dog, we now have a rescued rooster that Jose spotted injured on the side of the road one morning while taking his children to school. “Aurelio” is now fine and seems right at home with all the kitties and they don’t seem to notice him. Pretty soon, he will be joining the Greeter

Cats who rush to the gate for visitors with treats! In the meantime, he makes sure Jose gets up on time in the morning.

We are sad to report that Jose’s brother, Carlos, and his family have moved away leaving Jose and Hilda once again as sole caretakers of the shelter. Carlos had the primary responsibility of caring for the grounds and giving Jose a chance to take a day off! We plan to organize a Volunteer Day in late May to do some yard work and general cleaning before the summer rains start.

FEATURED FELINE: MAMA ROSA

Rosa and her five kittens

Rosa and her five kittens

In March we told the story of Rosa and the miracle rescue of her five babies. She was a good mama and we are happy to report that all survived and three of the kittens, Roger, Ramon and Renata have gone to loving homes! We hope that the last two, Rene the calico and Ramiro the gray/white will also be adopted soon.

Rosa continues to live in the PuRR Nursery where she is a wonderful housemother to a bunch of lively kittens, but what she really needs is her own Forever Home. She is a beautiful soft Calico with medium-long hair, approximately a year and a

ADOPTIONS

The Saturday Adoption Booth at Daiquiri Dick’s is over for this season, so PetCo is now the primary place to look for your new Kitty! We will have a selection of kittens there every weekend, Friday morning through Sunday night, all vaccinated, sterilized and ready to go! We had 10 adoptions there in March but only 3 in April so that was disappointing.

We are grateful to Mary & Thomas Stanton for recently adopting FOUR of our little ones!!! They saw photos of Mama Rosa’s litter on our FaceBook page and made a trip to the shelter just to meet them. They first fell in love with siblings Roger & Ramon…..and then decided they couldn’t leave without also adopting Lion and Jezebel. Meow!
