FEATURED FELINE: TEXAS

Featured Feline Texas

Mama Montana and her five babies were rescued by a PuRR volunteer in February….four survived and one was adopted.  Texas and his sister Dakota and brother Maine are still in the PuRR Nursery awaiting their chance for a Forever Home!  With SO many new tiny kittens up for adoption, it gets more and more difficult for the slightly older ones to compete and eventually they will have to be released to live in the yard.  If you would like more info on Texas or his siblings, contact Linda at adopt@purrproject.com

SHELTER NEWS

New Concrete in MayThanks to a generous donation from Charlie and Carol McCullough, our latest project was completed in May….the elimination of some dirt areas with new concrete….a suggestion from guidelines by the ASC (Association of Shelter Veterinarians).  A “Memory Bench” was also added along with the purchase of an emergency generator.  The donation also included scheduling additional vet visits in June with the primary focus of testing and treating yard cats with health issues.  We hope to incorporate as many of the ASC guidelines as possible in the coming months and years.

THE PURR NURSERY

The PuRR Nursery is about as full as it can possibly be with almost 35 kittens!!  It’s really a never-ending task for Dra. Eva to keep up with all the testing of new ones, plus deworming and vaccinating and scheduling spay/neuter surgeries when they are ready.  Plus she must detect health issues and try to isolate and treat for any infectious diseases…..just like little kids…..when one gets a cold, it spreads rapidly!  We simply have no space for new rescues right now and are desperately trying to find homes for some to make room for new kitties.  We’ve had 16 adoptions since February 1, but that’s only an average of one a week.  At that rate, it will take until Christmas to find homes just for the ones we have.  We will continue to have the regular adoption post at Plaza Marina on Fridays but are looking for new venues.

LOOKING BACK

Brisa, abril de 2012

Brisa, April 2012

Looking back to our newsletter this month in 2012, our Featured Feline was “Brisa”.  No one was sure where she came from or how long she had been at the shelter, but the vet thought she was around 3 years old.  She was a Greeter Cat, always at the front gate when visitors arrived! This sweet little girl is still at PuRR and now resides in the Senior Center.  When she began losing weight and not grooming herself and appeared to be in serious trouble, a check-up showed she needed extensive dental surgery.

Brisa, May 2018

She had been Virtually Adopted by both Maggy Deike and Jennifer Armstrong & Bill Warren so funds were available to provide special medical care.   Last month she had 11 teeth removed and the surgeon was amazed at her quick recovery!  (Cats can begin eating kibble again shortly after surgery, even if all 30 teeth are removed.) She has since gained weight and now is looking like her old “young” self again!

GRACIAS! THANKS! MERCI! DANKE! ARIGATO!
