SHELTER UPDATE
The weather has finally turned so that the days are bearable and the evenings pleasantly cool! Roadwork in Porvenir and on the main road leading to the shelter has caused long detours all month to reach the ranch. No tropical storms, so no muddy potholes, just lots of dust!
Every week finds new kittens, often as young as two weeks old. Dra. Eva’s helpers give them a warm bath before a meal and a safe place to rest in the clinic. They are sometimes too young to do anything else. We found fosters for six of the youngest ones.
PETCO ADOPT-A-THON
We held our third KITTEN ADOPT-A-THON the weekend of November 20. Sixteen lucky kitties got to travel from the PuRR Nursery to spend the weekend in the Petco Adoption Center. All were tested, sterilized and ready to win the heart of some lucky human in search of a new furry companion! We had fingers and paws crossed for a lot of adoptions.
Karen & Walt Trolson were waiting on Friday for the kitties to arrive. After spending play time with each and every one, they couldn’t decide on just one…..so they chose TWO! Valkiria and Nahuel will soon be traveling to their new home in Edmonds, Washington, where they will join “Foxy”, a previous PuRR adoption! Nikolai, Maya, Libby, Ingrid and Lara also found homes here in Vallarta so a total of
seven not going to spend their life in a shelter. We are very grateful.
THE PURR NURSERY
We still have 41 kittens of various ages either in foster or in the PuRR Nursery and every other casita where we can make room! Some of the older kittens who have been passed over for adoption have been released to live in the gardens, as well as three mother cats. If you are interested in adopting one of these sweet felines, remember we are at PetCo Adoption Center every Saturday and Sunday. Or contact Linda at adopt@purrproject.com for more information.
REST IN PEACE: GRETCHEN DEWITT AND MARIA O’CONNOR
Purr Project recently lost two great supporters, animal lovers and women who made a huge difference during their time in Banderas Bay.
Gretchen was an original co-founder of the SPCAPV and more recently co-founder and guiding light behind PEACE Animals. Sterilizing thousands of animals each year in their free clinics, PEACE made a huge difference in reducing the number of unwanted dog and cats in the area.
Mary Beth “Maria” O’Connor donated her legal services and also adopted several PuRR cats. We send a big Thank You to her friends Sharon Tognetti, Sarah Weber, Tom & Vickie Mason, David Schwendeman, Terrence Reilly and Wayne Franklin for their generous donation to PuRR Project in Maria’s memory. Volunteer Marilyn Khan has been working hard to find homes for her nine cats and reports that all have been placed with friends of Maria.
We also want to thank Connor and Stephanie Watts of Los Muertos Brewing Company for their donation in memory of Maria! Their Agave Maria beer was brewed in her honor and a portion of sales last month went to PuRR Project. Both these remarkable women will be missed in our lives.
DONATING
With no planned fund-raising events in Puerto Vallarta for the foreseeable future, individual donations are keeping the shelter open! With so many new cats and few adoptions, our costs for food, medicine, litter, cleaning supplies, and vet bills are higher than ever before. We are thankful for every penny and every peso that our loyal supporters have donated in a time that we realize is difficult for so many. If you would like to help, click on the DONATE line for more information.
