SHELTER UPDATE: MEATBALLS WITH NO SPAGHETTI
When you have a population of around 200 adult cats living on the PuRR shelter grounds at any one time, you have to get creative in ways to give them their medication! Dra. Eva and Dr. Alberto make an effort to identify and treat yard cats with noticeable illnesses or injuries each week. But we learned many years ago that to treat all of the yard cats with periodic medication for parasites……we needed MEATBALLS!
Volunteers open dozens of cans of cat food and
start making little “meatballs” which fill many trays. Then Dra. Eva injects each with a dosage of the appropriate medication. In the meantime, the yard cats can smell all the food and start gathering around the clinic! When all is ready, the doors are opened and Jose, Carlos and the volunteers rush out with the trays to place in strategic spots all around the shelter grounds and on the roof. After every tray is licked clean, we have a lot of very happy cats who loved their “treat”!
FUNDRAISING: PUSSY CAT CONCERT
The March 5 concert was a huge success with more than 160 PuRR supporters enjoying an afternoon of music at El Rio BBQ. We are grateful to all the individuals and businesses that donated the great prizes for the Raffle. Thanks to Lydia Damato who had the winning 50/50 Raffle ticket and donated it all back to PuRR!! Las Mambas and Amy Armstrong & Fernando provided music to rock to and some humor as well. Marilyn Khan would have been thrilled at the wonderful response to this fundraiser in her memory.
OUR VET – DRA. EVA TORRES
We feel so lucky to have such a dedicated and cat-loving vet as Dra. Eva, who visits the shelter twice a week. It’s a lot of hard work and responsibility to keep track of all the testing, vaccinations, spay/neuters and other medical needs of not just the new kittens but all the cats that live in the gardens. And she can recall the names of almost all of them!!! As well as her full-time veterinary job at Sabuesos, she usually has other wildlife at her home that are being rehabilitated to release back into the wild. In the last year alone…..baby crocodiles, possums, pygmy owls and falcons!!
FEATURED FELINE: ISABEL
This beautiful PuRR cat is really ready for her Forever Home!! Isabel has long silky fur, is about one and a half years old and has been at the shelter since she was a little kitten. We feel she would be a purr-fect kitty for someone who wants a very calm, loving feline companion. If you are interested in adopting Isabel or one of our other older kitties, contact Bama at adopt@purrproject.com.
UPCOMING EVENTS: KITTY BINGO
We get so many people asking us if we are ever going to be having Kitty BINGO again! We are working with Nacho Daddy on some possible dates in late April and May. So follow us on FaceBook for any breaking news and get ready to shout “MEOW” when you win a great prize.
GRACIAS! THANKS! MERCI! DANKE! ARIGATO!
Again, we thank all the people who made our Pussy Cat concert such a success!
We are also grateful for generous donations last month from Cherri Gillmore, Lisa Mechele, Ocho Tostados, Nina & Nosh Vellani, Lucy Embree, Lisa von Thillo and Ian Harris!
